Mosquito Control
In cooperation with Jefferson County government and the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Health Department operates a seasonal mosquito control program April through October each year depending on available funds. There is no charge for any of our services. Residents of the county experiencing problems with adult mosquitoes may request spray truck services by calling 997-3343 or by email: JeffersonMosquitoControl@doh.state.fl.us
Please give us your name, address and phone number. Once you request services you will be permanently added to the spray list. It may take 3 to 4 weeks before your request can be assigned to a route and the driver makes it back to that route again for treatment. After that, services can be expected between every ten days to two weeks depending on the weather.
In addition to spray truck services, those citizens with ponds or ditches that hold water year-round on their property can sign up for mosquito fish (Gambusia spp.) These fish will feed on the mosquito larvae. When available, we will call you and let you know when you can come by the mosquito yard and acquire your fish. Bring one 5-gallon bucket per pond and we?ll fill it up for you.

Most mosquitoes are not capable of flying very far, so if you have mosquitoes they are likely breeding close by. Eliminating standing water in buckets and old tires is easy. You?ll also want to check that your gutters aren?t holding water, things like old boats don?t have a puddle in them, or that your trays under the flower pots don?t stay full of water. Even a tea spoon of water can be enough to spawn a multitude of biting adult mosquitoes. Additionally, in seasons with a large amount of rain fall the Eastern Tree Hole mosquito will be of particular concern for rural residents of the county. These mosquitoes lay there eggs in the holes made by wood boring insects in trees.
