The Marion County Health Department manages the School Health Program for children within the Marion County School System.

Some schools in the county have an assigned registered nurse (RN) on their campus on a full-time basis.  These RN's maintain the school health room by providing first aid and comfort measures to ill and/or injured students and assist children with their prescribed medication.  Nurses, not assigned to a school full-time, provide services on a rotating basis between multiple schools.

Services:

• Health screenings including, but not limited to, vision, scoliosis, nutrition, and growth and development. Appropriate health referrals are made, if indicated.

• Immunization review at both public and private schools.

• Nursing assessments, health counseling and referrals.

• Perform specialized nursing services for medically complex children, such as, catheterizations, tube feedings and tracheotomy care.

• Train appropriate personnel to perform medical procedures as allowed by Florida law.

• Attend educational placement meetings for health related issues.

• Serve as a resource for parents and school staff relating to issues, i.e., head lice or other communicable disease, immunizations requirements, school entry physical exam requirements, etc.

• Assists with referrals to Children's Medical Services (CMS), Lion's Club and other public or private agencies.

• Provides classroom health education.

The School Health Program also has support staff to assist the nurses and perform clerical duties.

• All students enrolled in Marion County Public Schools

• Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

• Office Phone Hours 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
