Biomedical Waste:

All businesses that generate medical waste are inspected to make sure the waste is stored and disposed of in a safe manner. Residents who use syringes, needles and lancets can obtain a container and dispose of this waste at our office for a nominal fee.

Food Hygiene:

Food is one of the most common methods of spreading disease. Outbreaks of food-related illnesses are investigated to eliminate the cause of the illness and to require corrective actions to prevent future outbreaks. The Department of Business and Professional Regulation handles the permitting and inspection of restaurants. Our office inspects food establishments such as school cafeterias, movie theaters, nursing homes, jails, hospitals and day care centers.

Fuel Storage Tank Program:

Groundwater Contamination:

The most common groundwater in Martin County that could cause health problems is petroleum. Hundreds of underground petroleum tanks and piping at gas stations have leaked over the years. Our office samples well around these contaminated storage systems for leaks.

Indoor Air Quality:

The air quality in homes and businesses can cause numerous health problems. Investigations are conducted to assess air quality and prevent building related illnesses.

Rabies:

Rabies is a virus that is spread by the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Raccoons, foxes, cats, bats and bobcats are the most common rabid animals found in Martin County. We test animals for the virus and monitor quarantined pets. Residents should vaccinate their pets and avoid contact with wild animals.

Septic Tank Systems:

Wastewater must be properly treated so that it does not contaminate wells or rivers. Our office makes sure that septic systems are properly construction so that they do not overflow or pollute groundwater. We also monitor companies that pump out septic tanks and that service portable toilets. Businesses that use hazardous chemicals are inspected to make sure that these wastes are disposed of properly and not poured down drains or into the septic tanks.
