Epidemiology

A communicable disease or condition may be transmitted directly or indirectly from person to person. Communicable disease outbreaks and risks usually receive widespread media attention and community interest. The Department of Health is the first agency to be contacted when conditions point to communicable diseases. Each case is individually investigated.

The staff at the Putnam County Health Department is trained to assess, evaluate, and monitor reports of communicable diseases to prevent epidemics. This helps to control outbreaks of disease and minimize the threat to individuals, family members and the entire community.

The Putnam County Health Department Program Epidemiology Program investigates disease outbreaks in order to identify their source, intervene to protect others who may be at risk, and identify ways to prevent additional cases. The Epidemiology program provides disease control education and consultation for the public, physicians, hospitals, schools, daycares, nursing homes, animal services, and other institutions in the community.

Tuberculosis (TB)

TB prevention and detection traditionally has been a primary function of the Department of Health. The Putnam County Health Department is no exception.
