STD Clinical
Services:
Clinical services are provided in strict
confidence and are available to all Florida residents who
seek care for the prevention of STDs. Clinic sites offer STD
services on a sliding fee and/or no cost basis to adults and
adolescents, regardless of their citizenship status. Florida
Law assures adolescents confidential STD clinical services.
Clinical services for STDs include: risk assessment,
physical examination, numerous STD tests, treatment and
counseling. The risk assessment helps to identify sexual
behaviors and other risky behaviors that increase the
chances of becoming infected with an STD. (Remember there
are 26 STDs that are currently identified). The physical
examination is brief and focuses on identifying symptoms or
signs of infection, which may be caused by a sexually
transmitted disease. Usually you are tested for chlamydia,
gonorrhea, syphilis, yeast, urethritis, and trichomoniasis.
HIV and pregnancy tests are also available at your request.
Some of these tests are developed in the clinic as you wait
while others are sent to a laboratory. You may be asked to
return to the clinic for those test results. If, at the time
of your visit, the clinic doctor or nurse practitioner
diagnoses that you have an STD, you will be provided
treatment during the visit, or given a prescription to
purchase treatment at a pharmacy. Trained counselors will
talk with you about reducing your risk for getting STDs and
how to prevent infections from spreading to your partners.
The average time a person will be in the clinic when seeking
services is 1-½ hours.
