School Health

School Health Services in Suwannee County are provided by the Suwannee County School District and the Suwannee County Health Department.

The Suwannee County Health Department employs one school health coordinator, RN, LPN and school health aide for the Suwannee County school system. The Suwannee County School District employs one school district school health coordinator and six RNs.

Health Services are conducted as a part of the total school health program replace, parental responsibility and are designed to encourage parents to devote attention to child health, to discover health problems, and to encourage use of the services of their physicians, dentists and community health agencies. School health staff provide medication administration, health counseling, health education, referral and follow-up of suspected or confirmed health problems and following routine health screenings. They also provide consultation with students, parents or guardians concerning the need for health evaluation by the family physician, dentist or other specialist when definitive diagnosis or treatment is indicated. School health staff review and maintain records on incidents of health problems, corrective measures taken and other information that may be needed to plan and evaluate health problems and policies. The school nurse provides health information when necessary regarding the placement of students in exceptional student programs and the re-evaluation at periodic intervals of students placed in such programs. A student will be exempt from any of these services if his or her parent(s) or guardian requests such exemption in writing.

Emergency Health Needs

A full time registered nurse staffs all schools in Suwannee County except the Suwannee-Hamilton Technical Center. Onsite emergency health needs are provided at each school by school health nurses/school health personnel from the health department, and/or other trained staff who are currently certified by a nationally recognized certifying agency to provide first aid and CPR. Onsite emergency health needs means management and aid for illness or injury pending the students return to the classroom or release to a parent, guardian, designated friend or designated health care provider.
