Public Health Programs

Communicable Disease Surveillance requires reporting and investigation for all reportable diseases. This is accomplished with assistance and reporting from physicians and laboratories when they encounter positive lab results for specific diseases as designated by the CDC and the State Health Office. Activities may include home and environmental assessment, contact investigations, testing and medications given as preventative measures.   Taylor County Health Department actively participates in the West Nile Virus testing when the need arises.

Immunization Program

The Immunization Program provides vaccines for all ages with immunizations given without charge for infants through age 18. Vaccines are provided by a federal grant named Vaccines for Children (VFC).  CDC offers a web page that will show the immunizations needed by your child.

Adult immunizations are given for a fee to prevent tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis B, influenza, measles, mumps, rubella, and pneumococal pneumonia. Please call (850)584-5087 for an appointment for any of the above immunizations.

Chronic Disease Program

The Chronic Disease Program provides diabetic testing and counseling, insulin programs, hypertension testing and counseling. Also, we actively provide guidance to clients with diabetes and related problems.

Sexually Transmitted Disease Program

The Sexually Transmitted Disease Program consists of testing, counseling and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases. Emphasis is placed upon education with the goal being prevention. Testing, counseling, and treatment is strictly confidential.

HIV Testing and Counseling

HIV testing and Counseling is incorporated into the program for all sexually active clients. Condoms are provided at no charge and clients are counseled to protect themselves and their partners from exposure to HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Very strict guidelines are used to maintain confidentiality.

AIDS Drug and Assistance Program

Our Aids Drug and Assistance Program, through the State Pharmacy, provides medication to clients who are HIV+ or have been diagnosed with Aids and have no other resources to obtain necessary medicines for their condition.

Tuberculosis Program

Tuberculosis control is a cooperative effort by our Health Care providers and the Nurse TB Case Manager who monitor tuberculosis in Taylor County. This program utilizes skin testing, chest x-rays, sputum testing, and medications if indicated. Medications are used to treat infections of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis and prophylaxis for individuals exposed to active cases or with a reactive skin test.
