Influenza
Please take the Flu Survey
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory disease caused by the influenza virus. The virus attacks cells in the upper respiratory tract, including those in the nose, throat, bronchi, and lungs. It is transmitted from person to person when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks and sends flu virus into the air. The virus is then inhaled by other people, enters the nose, throat, or lungs and begins to multiply. Influenza may also be spread when a person touches a surface that has flu viruses on it, such as a door handle, and then touches his or her nose or mouth. The flu typically comes on hard and fast, and is characterized by high fever, chills, fatigue, body aches, sore throat, and a dry cough. These symptoms can be similar to the common cold, but the flu is caused by a different family of viruses, and symptoms are typically much more severe. Millions of Americans are hit with the flu each year, resulting in lost time at work or school and in severe cases hospitalization and even death. It is more important than ever that everyone does their part in trying to prevent the spread of influenza by taking precautionary measures, recognizing the signs of flu, and getting proper treatment. Now is the time to learn about the flu and what you can do to protect yourself and your family from being affected by this illness.
