SMART GROWTH COALITION
Smart Growth Coalition logo The Smart Growth Coalition consists of interested citizens, governmental agencies along with public and private organizations who believe a community's growth can be better planned for a healthier, more livable and sustainable infrastructure. Our mission is to enhance the health, safety and welfare of our community through increasing awareness of responsible growth.

In 2007, 59.6% of adults and 12.5% of high school students were overweight or obese in Collier County and those numbers continue to rise. The Smart Growth Coalition focuses on health in our 'built' environment while bringing multiple entities together to collaborate to reduce the inactivity and obesity epidemics that are currently plaguing our youth.

Designing Healthy Communities Series by Dr. Richard Jackson
The Collier County Health Department and Smart Growth Coalition do not promote or receive any profits from the Designing Healthy Communities books, DVD's or CD's written by Dr. Richard Jackson. Dr. Richard Jackson explains the link between our health and the way our communities - especially our suburbs - are designed. Obesity, asthma, diabetes and heart disease are all aggravated by the auto-centric way we live our lives today. It's no secret that today's generations of children are likely to have shorter lives than their parents because of their unhealthy lifestyles. It doesn't have to be this way. Well-designed communities can improve both physical and mental health, as Dr. Jackson explains in this four-part public television series and the accompanying book Designing Healthy Living.
