United States and Florida HIV/AIDS Fact Sheet

 

UNITED STATES

  • Cumulatively through 1999, 733,374 AIDS cases have been reported in the US.

  • In 1999, 46,400 AIDS cases were reported in the US.

  • Cumulatively through 1999, 8,718 pediatric AIDS cases have been reported in the US.

  • Males account for 83% of cumulative reported AIDS cases, and females account for 17%. The male-to-female ratio is 4.9:1.

  • Of the cumulative number of AIDS cases, 43% are among whites, 37% are among blacks, and 18% are among Hispanics.

  • Cumulatively through 1999, 122,607 HIV cases have been reported, which includes 2,026 pediatric HIV cases (As of December 1999, 33 states require HIV infection reporting).

  • In 1999, 21,419 HIV cases were reported in the US.

  • Males account for 72% of cumulative reported HIV cases, and females account for 28%. The male-to-female ratio is 2.6:1.

  • Of the cumulative number of HIV cases, 52% are among blacks, 38% are among whites, and 8% are among Hispanics.

FLORIDA

  • Cumulatively through 1999, 75,646 AIDS cases have been reported in Florida. Florida ranks third in the nation in the number of AIDS cases.

  • In 1999, 5,424 AIDS cases were reported in Florida.

  • Cumulatively through 1999, 1,368 pediatric AIDS cases have been reported in Florida. Florida ranks second in the nation in the number of pediatric AIDS cases.

  • Males account for 78% of cumulative reported AIDS cases, and females account for 22%. The male-to-female ratio is 3.5:1.

  • Of the cumulative number of AIDS cases, 46% are among blacks, 39% are among whites, and 15% are among Hispanics.

  • Cumulatively through 1999, 14,765 HIV cases have been reported, which includes 142 pediatric HIV cases. (Reporting of HIV was implemented July 1, 1997. )

  • In 1999, 6,402 HIV cases were reported in Florida.

  • Males account for 62% of cumulative reported HIV cases, and females account for 38%. The male-to-female ratio is 1.6:1.
