Crohn's Disease and Colitis

The 2005 Florida legislature passed House Bill 869, known as "Crohn's and Colitis Disease Research Act". The Act requires the Department of Health (DOH), Bureau of Epidemiology to conduct an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) epidemiology study. The goal is to gain a better understanding of the prevalence of these diseases in the state, the unique demographic characteristics of the patient population, and the role that environmental factors and family history play in the development of IBD. A report of the findings will be delivered to the Governor, the President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives by February 1, 2006.

The Bureau of Epidemiology is working with an advisory committee to guide this study. The committee consists of representatives from the University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions, DOH, Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, the House of Representatives, the Senate, medical providers, and other interested groups.
