Sun Safety/Skin Cancer Pilot Study
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting Americans. People with increased exposure to UV radiation during childhood and adolescence are at increased risk for skin cancer in adulthood. The purpose of this study was to:

  • Assess the behaviors and attitudes toward skin cancer prevention and sun protection among adolescents visiting beaches in eastern coastal Florida counties
  • Provide Educational materials about skin cancer prevention
  • Examine some of the barriers to sunscreen use
  • Increase healthy behaviors associated with primary prevention of cancer

Rip Current Study
During the summer of 2003, there was an increased number of drowning incidents that took place along the beaches of Florida's panhandle. The purpose of this study was to:

  • Examine the beach and surf conditions during the time of these events
  • Examine risk factors among the drown victims
  • Assess beachgoers' understanding of beach conditions and surf safety systems
