Overview

The lead alert network has a general and specific mission. The specific mission is to provide warning to our lead poisoning prevention partners about consumer products that have been recalled due to their lead content. The general mission is to protect all children in Florida from lead hazards, and promote public health services that will prevent the exposure to lead contaminants.

The lead alerts, warnings, recommendations, and other information is transmitted by e-mail or fax to the Florida CLPPP by various agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The other partners of Florida's Lead Alert Network are then notified by the Fl CLPPP of the recalled product(s) via email. Participants in Florida then forward the information to local partners work directly with children and families.

The Lead Alert Network partners include: Florida's County Health Departments, The Community Services Block Grant Program, the Weatherization Assistance Program, the Community Development Block Grant Program, The School Nutrition Program, The School Health Program, and the Committee for the Elimination of Childhood Lead Poisoning.

Hazard: The surface paint on the toys contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Description: This recall involves the following wooden toys and a plastic military vehicle toy playset. The style number, UPC codes and “Soldier Bear” logo are printed on the toy’s packaging.

Codee International Corp. Recalls Children’s Jewelry Due to Risk of Lead Exposure

Hazard: The recalled jewelry contains high levels of lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.

Description: This recall involves the Codeena Princess children’s jewelry. Only jewelry with item numbers KS1367SS and KS1369SCP are included in the recall. The item number is printed on the back of the packaging. The children’s jewelry sets were sold in a variety of sets including pink or white pearl-like necklace, bracelet and earring or ring combinations. Some sets have studded charms dangling on the bracelet and the necklace.

Sold at: Discount stores nationwide from September 2005 through August 2007 for about $5.

Children’s Toys Recalled by Dollar Tree Stores Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

Hazard: The recalled toys contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Description: The Baby Bead & Wire Toys are colored wires and colored beads that can slide on a natural wood platform. These bead toys have item number 903419 and date code 71 printed on the back of the packaging. The Speed Racer Pull Back & Go Action! Cars are yellow with black stripes and white with red stripes. Item number 873820 and date code 77 is printed on the back of the packaging.

Sold at: Dollar Tree, Dollar Bill$, Dollar Express, Greenbacks, Only One $1 and Deal$ stores nationwide from March 2007 through October 2007 (Baby Bead & Wire Toys) and from September 2007 through November 2007 (Speed Racer Cars) for $1.

Fishing Games Sold at Grocery Stores Recalled by Far East Brokers Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

Hazard: The recalled game has parts that contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Description: The recalled Fishing Game contains a fishing pole, one large battery operated fish, and three small wind-up fish. The UPC #011546208270 and product #25741 are printed on the product’s packaging.

Sold at: Grand Union Family Markets, Southern Family Markets, P&C Stores, Publix Super Markets, and Food Lion stores nationwide from October 2007 through November 2007 for about $10.

Horseshoe Magnets Recalled by United Scientific Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

Hazard: Surface paint on the magnets contains high levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standards.

Description: This recall involves horseshoe-shaped magnets sold in five sizes. The horseshoes have red paint on the surface of the magnet. Product numbers included in the recall are: SHM020 (two inch), SHM030 (three inch), SHM040 (four inch), SHM050 (five inch), and SHM060 (six inch).

Sold by: Independent distributors nationwide from March 1995 through September 2007 for about $1. Distributors sold the products to schools for use in science classes.

Children’s Sunglasses Recalled by FGX International Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

Hazard: Surface paint on the sunglasses can contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Description: The recall involves 15 styles of children’s sunglasses. The style name is printed on the product inside the left temple arm. The name “Foster Grant” may also appear on the temple arm of some styles. The styles included in the recall are:

CPSC Recall Alert: December 6, 2007

RC2 Recalls Potty Training Seats Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

Hazard: Decorative plaque inserted into the back of the potty seat could have orange paint that contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Description: The recall involves the First Years 3-in-1 Flush and Sounds potty training seats. Each seat has either a yellow chair with a green removable seat and a purple lift out-pot or a blue chair with a white removable seat and green lift out-pot. The words "100 Acre Wood" are molded on the chair back. The plaque inserted into the back of the seat contains molded Winnie the Pooh and Tigger characters.

Sold at: Mass and specialty retailers nationwide from April 2006 through August 2007 for between $20 and $25.

Remedy: Consumers should keep these recalled items away from young children and should contact RC2 to receive a permanent clear protective cover that covers the plaque. The unit can still be used as a potty seat.

Bell Racing Recalls Collectible Mini Racing Helmets Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

Hazard: Surface paints on the recalled helmets contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Description: The recalled products are six-inch tall, collectible, miniature helmets, modeled after helmets worn by several race car drivers. The follow models are included in the recall: Terry Borcheller helmet, part number 2005740; Kurt Busch helmet, part number 2001368; and Vitor Meira helmet, part number 2001381. The part number is located on the product’s packaging with the UPC.

American Greetings Corp. Recalls Confetti Bursts Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

Hazard: The surface paint on the individual bags of confetti contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Description: The recalled products contain confetti in plastic bags. When the bags are inflated, consumers squeeze the bag and confetti bursts out. Each package contains six confetti bursts.

Sold at: Discount, toy, drug, grocery, party, and specialty/gift stores nationwide from December 2003 through September 2007 for about $3.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the recalled confetti bursts away from children and contact American Greetings for instructions on returning the confetti bursts to American Greetings to receive a coupon redeemable wherever American Greetings’ products are sold.

Reeves International Inc. Recalls Holiday Ornaments Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

Hazard: Surface paints on the ornaments contain high levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standards.

Description: The 2006 Snow Princess Stirrup Ornament is a stirrup-shaped ornament with a white prancing horse and blue ribbons. “2006” is stamped on the rim of the ornament. The 2007 Wintersong Stirrup Ornament is a stirrup-shaped ornament with a grey horse with saddle bags with a horn and a violin. “2007” is stamped on the rim of the ornament. The 2007 Photo Frame Horse Shoe Ornament is a horse shoe shaped ornament with a brown horse with rider jumping over a gate. “Happy Holiday 2007” is printed on the back of the ornament.

Sold at: Various retailers nationwide, including JC Penney catalog and Web site, from July 2006 through October 2007 for between $15 and $18.

Slipcovers Used With Boppy Pillows Recalled Due to Choking Hazard and Risk of Lead Exposure

Hazard: The zipper pull on the slipcovers can break, posing a choking hazard to young children. In addition, paint on the zippers contains excess levels of lead, which violates the federal lead paint standard.

Description: This recall involves velvet and boa slipcovers intended for use with the Boppy® Bare Naked nursing and support pillow.

Slipcovers recalled due to a choking hazard were sold in three color combinations and have the following UPC and date codes found on the California Flammability Law tag. Slipcovers sold in clear vinyl packages are labeled Boppy® Luxe.

Hazard: The paint on the pencil pouches’ zipper pulls contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Description: The recall includes “Stuff Keepers” pencil pouches and “Bear Pencil Pouches.” The “Stuff Keepers” pencil pouches are clear vinyl, measure 9 inches by 6 inches, and have a green, orange, pink or blue-colored zipper. Style number 63525 is printed on the packaging. The “Bear Pencil Pouches” have soft fabric with a stuffed bear face, and measure 9 inches by 3 inches. Style number 67221 is printed on the packaging.

Sold by: School supply distributors in schools nationwide from September 1997 through October 2007 for between 50 cents and $2.

Description: The recalled metal necklaces and bracelets have silver-colored charms. Some also have colored beads. “Awesome Boutique” or “Share the Love” is printed on some of the jewelry’s packaging. The jewelry includes a necklace with a metal flower-shaped charm that hangs from a pink cord, a metal heart charm bracelet, a metal heart angel charm bracelet with colored beads, a metal bracelet with four heart charms and ruby-colored beads, necklaces with painted hearts that hang from a cord, and necklaces with tiny purses in various colors.

Discount School Supply Recalls Paint Brushes Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

Hazard: Surface paint on the brush handles can contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Description: The recall involves a set of six “shaving-style” brushes, which are about 4-inches long. The brushes’ handles are painted blue, purple, orange, yellow, lime green, and pink. The item number #SHVBRSH is printed on the product’s packaging. Brush sets with handles in brown, dark blue, red, green, blue, and black are not included in this recall. The recalled brushes were also included with the “BioColor® Foam Paint Starter Kit” and “Colorations® Foam Paint Starter Kit.”

Fisher-Price Recalls Bongo Band Toys Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

Hazard: Surface paints on the toys contain excessive levels of lead, which violates the federal law prohibiting lead paint on children's toys.

Description: The recalled toys have two bongos, including one with a yellow and green plastic drum base with a blue drum surface. The other bongo is yellow and green plastic drum base with an orange drum surface with “It’s a Big, Big World” printed on it. The toys were sold with animal shaped accessories including a monkey, bird, tambourine and drum stick. The toys have product number K9343 inside the orange drum. A date code between 139-7SH and 232-7SH is printed on the drum’s orange ring surface. Bongo Band toys included in this recall must have both the product number and date code.

The recall involves the Geo Trax Freightway Transport and Geo Trax Special Track Pack locomotive toys. These toys are red with yellow paint on the ladder and horn details. The recalled models were manufactured between July 31, 2006 and August 20, 2007 and have a date code between 212-6CK through 325-6CK or 001-7CK through 232-7CK marked on the bottom of the product. The packaging on the Freightway Transport model is marked H5705 and the packaging on the Special Track Pack model is marked K3013.

Description: The recalled toy is made of bendable plastic and is in the shape of a brown dog with black ears, paws and feet, a Dalmatian dog with pink paws, a white dog with orange spots, a brown dog with pink paws, a white cat with orange stripes, a brown cat with pink paws, a black cat with pink ears and a white cat with brown spots. Description: The recalled metal charms were sold under the name “Charming Thoughts.” Most of the charms are silver-colored with small silver loops. They were sold in packages of two to 12 pieces. The packages are marked “The Card Connection,” “Charming Thoughts” and “Hirschberg Schutz & Co. Inc.”The metal charms are various shapes including small hearts, crowns, birds, picture frames, perfume bottles and a cross. Some of the metal charms have small blue, pink or yellow stones and are printed with words including “princess,” “congratulations,” “city girl,” “world traveler” and “life’s blessings.” “Insert photo here,” “cherish,” “love,” and “honor” are printed on the picture frame charms. Description: The recalled sunglasses are a solid red color and have dark plastic lenses. They were sold with either a navy blue toddler cap featuring the character Mickey Mouse or a light blue toddler cap featuring the character Stitch. Both toddler caps have red bills. CCPSC, Dollar General Corp. Announce Recall of Costume Jewelry

Necklace and Earring Sets sold at Dollar General Stores nationwide from May 2005 through August 2005 for between $1 and $3.

Hazard: The recalled jewelry contains high levels of lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.

Description: The flower necklace and earring set features a floral design in four color variations: yellow, orange, pink and purple. The purse necklace and earring set features a dangling purse charm in black, red, blue, orange, pink or purple. The corded swirl necklace and earring set features a twisted metal swirl pattern hanging from a black, blue or purple cord. The faux amber necklace and earring set features a large faux amber gem cut in a heart or cross shape. The 5-strand bead necklace and earring set were sold in four color variations: orange, purple, blue and multi-color.

Remedy: Consumers should take the recalled jewelry away from children immediately and return to Dollar General stores for a refund.

CPSC, Delta Enterprise Corp. Announce Recall of Certain Cribs Sold at Toys R Us Stores

Lov’s “Europa” Natural Color Cribs sold exclusively at Toys R Us nationwide from July 2004 through August 2005 for about $200.

Hazard: The crib's paint contains high levels of lead. Lead poisoning in children is associated with behavioral problems, learning disabilities, hearing problems and growth retardation.

Description: The cribs are made of wood and are natural color. Only cribs that are labeled Lov’s Europa with “Style # 4827-2 M.F.G. No.: W 24088 Date: 22 JUN 2004” are included in the recall. The brand, style and date code are printed on a label attached to the mattress support platform.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled crib immediately and return to retailer where purchased for a credit or refund.

CPSC, Stravina Operating Co. Announce Recall of Children’s Metal Necklaces and Zipper Pulls

The recalled metal necklaces and zipper pulls were sold at discount, toy, party, grocery and drug stores from March 2002 through September 2005 for between $2 and $4.

Hazard: The recalled metal jewelry contains high levels of accessible lead in the metal and/or the paint, posing a serious risk of lead poisoning to young children. Lead is toxic if ingested by children and can cause adverse health effects.

Description: The recalled necklaces are silver-colored with individual names painted in variety of colors. The nameplate on the necklace hangs from a 16-inch black cord. The necklace packages are marked “Personalized Necklace” and “Stravina”. UPC Code 0-35203-00039-7 is on the necklace package.he recalled zipper pulls are silver-colored with individual names that come in various colors. The zipper pull hangs from a silver-colored metal clip designed to attach to a backpack, a keyring, and zippers on clothing.Printed on the zipper pull’s packaging is ’Personalized Zipper Pull,“ ’Great for Backpacks and Keyrings too“ and ’Stravina.“ UPC Code 0-35203-00038-0 is written on the package.

CPSC Ban: April 7, 2003
CPSC Bans Candles With Lead-Cored Wicks

Overview: The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted unanimously to ban the manufacture and sale of lead-cored wicks and candles with lead-cored wicks. CPSC determined that candles using lead-cored wicks could present a lead poisoning hazard to young children. Some container, pillar, votive, and tealight candles use metal wicks and CPSC found that some contained lead. Tapers, commonly used as dinner candles, use cotton wicks and do not contain lead.

CPSC, Toys "R" Us, Inc. Announce Recall of Solid-colored and Multi- colored Sidewalk Chalk

Sold from: The sidewalk chalk was sold at Toys "R" Us stores nationwide from March 2003 to November 2003 for about $4.99 per package.

Hazard: The multi-colored and solid-colored sidewalk chalk contains high levels of lead, posing a risk of poisoning to young children.

Remedy: Return the sidewalk chalk to Toys "R" Us for a refund.
