Leading Health Indicator 8 (continued)

Decreasing Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Infant Mortality is a National and Florida Goal

There are significant racial disparities evident in Florida's maternal and infant health outcomes. The Department of Health works in partnership with local Healthy Start Coalitions to assure that all pregnant women and infants have access to care. Many local communities are providing outreach and targeting services to local high-risk areas in an effort to address these disparities. The department is also continuing program evaluation efforts to better understand the contributing factors for the increased risks in the African American population.

In 2000, three-fourths of all infant deaths were caused by perinatal conditions (occurring during pregnancy, labor and delivery), congenital anomalies or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
