Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood
Home Visiting (MIECHV) Program

Background

The Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program was established through a federal grant process issued jointly by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the Administration for Children and Families (ACF). The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is the designated lead agency and is working in partnership with the Department of Children and Families (DCF) to plan and implement the program.

The purpose of the program is to deliver coordinated home visiting services to pregnant women, infants, and young children in identified high-risk communities, with the dual goals of improving health and development outcomes and strengthening families. The program will identify and focus on communities that have high rates of:

  • premature birth, low birth weight infants, infant mortality;
  • poverty;
  • crime;
  • domestic violence;
  • high school drop-outs;
  • substance abuse;
  • unemployment; and
  • child maltreatment.

    The program will establish an integrated system of care to meet the complex and diverse needs of families and communities across Florida.
