The primary focus of the Florida
Department of Health Men's Health Initiative is to increase awareness about
men's health issues and to educate men and their families about the
importance of screening and early detection in preventing and treating
disease among men and boys. The Men's Health Initiative also provides
an opportunity to educate men and
boys about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle in
reducing premature deaths from disease and injury.
Presently, men die nearly
five years younger than women. This
was not always the case. In the 1920's the lifespan for men and women was
virtually the same. Today, men have higher death rates than women for nine
out of the 10 leading causes of death -- heart disease, cancer, stroke,
chronic lower respiratory diseases, unintentional injuries, Alzheimer's
disease, diabetes, influenza/pneumonia, kidney disease, and septicemia.* Yet, men are also less likely than women to
visit a doctor, get regular check-ups, have medical insurance, or lead a
healthy lifestyle.
The Men's Health Initiative is located within the Adult and Community Health
Unit of the Division of Family Health Services.
