September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

What is it?

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month was established to help increase public awareness and to educate men and their families about the nature and risks of prostate cancer which is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men in the United States, with lung cancer being the first.

Why is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month important?

Prostate cancer can be cured and it can be treated even in the later stages if detected early.  However, there is disagreement within the medical community about the benefits of regular prostate cancer screening.  For this reason, it is important that men educate themselves about the nature and risk of prostate cancer and understand the importance of talking to their doctors about the benefits and risks of prostate cancer screening tests.  This will allow them to make more informed decisions and choices about their health that are right for them and their families.

Where is it?

Awareness and screening events and activities take place all over the United States and internationally.

How can I participate?

Educate yourself about prostate cancer, whose at highest risk, and the importance of talking to your doctor about screening, early detection and treatment. Be on the lookout for educational forums, free prostate screening exams, and other events in your local community during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. You can also work with your county health department to host an awareness event in your local community where you can distribute educational materials about prostate cancer. Here is a list of suggested activities (PDF* - 214 KB).
