BIRTHS to TEENS in FLORIDA

Teen Births

  • In Florida, resident live births to mothers aged 18 years and under accounted for 8% of the total births in 2000.
  • State birth rates to teen girls aged 15-19 dropped from 85.7 per 1,000 in 1970 to 51.61 in 2000.
  • Both nationally and statewide, the steepest declines in teen birth rates were recorded for black teens. The state birth rate for black teens aged 15-19 has declined 26% since 1991.
  • Despite these declines, Florida birth rates in 2000 to mothers aged 18 years and under continue to be higher in percentage of teen births to nonwhite mothers (12.3%) than the percentage to white mothers (6.4%).
  • The birth rates for Hispanic teens have not mirrored the decrease in overall teen birth rates. The state birth rate for Hispanic teen girls aged 15-19 has increased 9% since 1991.
  • The birth rates for the youngest mothers in Florida aged 10-14 dropped from 2.0 in 1991 to 1.1 in 2000.
  • Of teen births in 1999 to girls aged 10-14, 59% were to black teens, 30% were to Hispanic teens, and 11% were to white teens.

Subsequent Births to Teens

  • Of the mothers aged 15-19 years giving birth in 2000, 21% of them had one or more previous live births.

Unwed Teen Births

  • Of the births to unwed mothers, 18.1% were to mothers aged 18 years and younger.
