State Partnership Grant

The Office of Minority Health was awarded a State Partnership Grant (SPG) from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2005. The grant provides the following:

Assistance in providing infrastructure to OMH

Development of a statewide minority health strategic plan

Assistance in building on-going partnerships and linkages with community-based organizations, local coalitions, with larger associations to address health needs and eliminate health disparities

Organizational development to identified community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, and Closing the Gap grantees

Development of a speakers bureau

Development of a web-based resource directory

Train specified Department of Health management staff in culturally and linguistically appropriate services in health care

Conduct best practice workshops

Body and Soul in Motion

body & soulBody and Soul in Motion is a wellness program developed for African American churches.  The program empowers church members to eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables every day for better health.  Churches that embrace Body and Soul in Motion help their members take care of their bodies as well as their spirits.  Body and Soul in Motion works by combining -

  • Pastoral Leadership
  • Educational activities

  • A church environment that supports healthly eating.

State Partnership Speaker's Bureau

The overarching goal of the Speakers Bureau is to provide support to community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, Closing the Gap grantees, and institutions involved in improving minority health by reducing and/or eliminating health disparities. The Speakers Bureau has a diverse group of motivating speakers, both professional and lay from the field of public health. The screening of speakers ensures that the SPG Speakers Bureau only recommends talented speakers.

Technical Assistance

Technical assistance provides an opportunity for participating community and faith based organizations to increase their capacity to improve minority health within their communities. The State Partnership program trainings are geared toward a large variety of audiences (ie. community members, board members, program directors). The ultimate goal of the training is give participants the critical knowledge and skills necessary to address the challenges surrounding minority health in their community. The current State Partnership Training series consists of modules in board governance, strategic planning and proposal writing and partnership development. Find out more about technical training.

Health Promotion among Minority Males

The focus of this Funding Opportunity Announcement is on health promotion among racial and ethnic minority men and encourages Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant applications from applicants that propose to stimulate and expand research in the health of minority men. Specifically, this initiative is intended to enhance the understanding of the numerous factors influencing the health promoting behaviors of racial and ethnic minority males and their subpopulations across the life cycle and encourage applications focusing on the development and testing of culturally and linguistically appropriate health-promoting interventions designed to reduce health disparities among racially and ethnically diverse males and their subpopulations age 21 and older.

Applications will be accepted from September 16, 2010 to September 13, 2013.

The Verizon Foundation: Serving the Non-Profit Community

The Verizon Foundation looks to forge and maintain partnerships around technology initiatives with local, regional, national and international organizations serving the needs of racial and ethnic communities, people with disabilities, and the economically and socially disadvantaged. The Verizon Foundation Web site also includes grant guidelines, an online grant eligibility quiz and a technology needs assessment section to help nonprofits in applying for grants online, which is the only way applications may be submitted. 

Applications will be accepted from January 1st through October 31st.

RGK Foundation Grants

RGK Foundation awards grants in the broad areas of Education, Community, and Medicine/Health. The Foundation's primary interests within Education include programs that focus on formal K-12 education (particularly mathematics, science and reading), teacher development, literacy, and higher education. Within Community, the Foundation supports a broad range of human services, community improvement, abuse prevention, and youth development programs. The Foundation's current interests in the area of Medicine/Health include programs that promote the health and well-being of children, programs that promote access to health services, and Foundation-initiated programs focusing on ALS.

Helping Outreach Programs to Expand Grant Program

The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) will provide up to $10,000 in funding to grassroots community- and faith-based victim service organizations and coalitions to improve outreach and services to crime victims, through support of program development, networking, coalition building, and service delivery. Funds may be used to develop program literature, train advocates, produce a newsletter, support victim outreach efforts, and recruit volunteers.

Grant for Alzheimer’s Disease Drug Development Program

This grant (PA-10-205) of about $3 Million is open to nonprofits, federally-recognized tribes and traditionally, minority-serving institutions in order to fund efforts to create new drug therapies that stop, slow or reverse the cognitive effects caused by the onset of Alzheimer’s.
