The Florida Department of Health (DOH), Office of Minority Health (OMH) 2008 Minority Health Disparities Summit’s theme is “Bridging the Gap: Embracing Solutions to Eliminate Health Barriers.” The Summit will examine health barriers that contribute to health disparities. The goal of the Summit is to present solutions and/or interventions to these barriers to help bridge the health gap in Florida. View the Minority Health Disparities Summit Press Release here.

Background
The Office of Minority Health (OMH) was established within the Department of Health in 2004, Florida Statute 20.43 (9). The office is responsible for the coordination of the Reducing Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities: Closing the Gap Grant Program, Florida Statute 381.7651-381.7356, Florida Healthy People 2010 Program,  and the State Partnership Grant Program. These programs address health disparities among Florida's racial and ethnic populations.

Summit Objectives

  • Examine barriers that contribute to health disparities.
  • Present innovative interventions, strategies and solutions to health barriers.
  • Increase knowledge and awareness of public and private health disparities programs that address Maternal & Infant Mortality, Diabetes, Cancer, HIV/AIDS, Immunization, Oral Health Care, Cardiovascular Disease, and Mental Health.
  • Present current research findings, statistics and recommendations concerning racial and ethnic health care disparities.

Poster Presentations
Posters will be presented at the Summit on the mornings of August 14th and August 15th at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay.

Poster topics are relevant to one of the identified health disparities: adult and child immunizations, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, maternal and infant mortality, or oral health care. Other areas of interest may include socioeconomic conditions, mental health, access to quality care, cultural competency, minorities in health care professions and clinical trials, culturally and linguistically appropriate services, health literacy and bias and prejudices in the health care system.

Poster Presenters:
Presenter attendance is limited to the poster session only without Summit registration. Poster presenters are encouraged to attend the remainder of the Summit by registering to attend sessions and enjoy meals. Registration for the Summit begins in June. Registration information is outlined below.

The 2008 Minority Health Disparities Summit will bring together a wide range of local, state, federal and territorial governmental agencies and private-sector partners. Our target constituents include:

  • Closing the Gap and State Partnership Grant Program grantees;
  • Federal, state and local public health professionals;

  • Health professional associations and consultant partners in prevention and control activities and programs;

  • Physicians, nurses, nutritionists, dietitians, pharmacists, and health educators;

  • Academic and research staffs from educational institutions; and
  • Undergraduate and post-graduate students in health-related fields.

Registration -
The registration fee, including lunch, is $100.00 for the Florida Minority Health Disparities Summit. ($110 after July 18th)

Early registration ends July 18th.
After July 18th, registration fees will increase by an additional $10. Online registration ends on August 4th. From August 4th to 8th, individuals may register by phone at (813) 929-1000. After August 8th, individuals will have to register on-site for a fee of $115.00. Continuing education contact hours will be offered for select sessions by Gulfcoast North Area Health Education Center.
