General Questions
Q: How can I become a Board member?
A: Board members are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. For more information about Gubernatorial Appointments, please visit the Governors website
 
Q: Who can attend Board meetings?
A: All Board meetings are open to the public and you are encouraged to attend.
 
Note: Under Florida law, e-mail addresses are public records. If you do not want your e-mail address released in response to a public records request, do not send electronic mail to this entity. Instead, contact this office by phone or in writing.
Q: How can I get a Board agenda?
A: You may request to be placed on the Board's Interested Parties list. The Board routinely sends out Agenda Outlines to interested parties 7-10 days prior to an upcoming board meeting. Copies of meeting agenda outlines and public agenda material are also available on our website.
 
Q: How can I file a complaint against a licensee?
A: You may print the Complaint Form from our website or call (850) 488-0595 or (850) 414-1976 to request one by mail.

To file a complaint on a non-medical related business or profession, please visit the Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
 
Q: How can I check if someone is licensed?
A: You may use our License Look-Up Search Screen. The best results often occur when the system receives the least amount of information. If licensee is one of our profiled professions, there will be a link at the upper right portion of the screen that says Link to Practitioner Profile. This will take you to practitioner reported information about their education, specialty certification, etc.
 
Q: How can I get a list of licensee information?
A: To obtain an electronic listing of active and inactive licensee’s mailing addresses and license status for DOH/MQA regulated professions use our Licensee Data Information service. Please note: The department does not maintain email addresses, fax or telephone numbers in the normal course of business.
 
Q: Is a massage therapy license required to perform reflexology and reiki?
A: Yes.

Licensure
 
Q: How often is the NCTMB exam given?
A: The (NCTMB) is offered and administered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) through Computer Based Testing which is available six (6) days per week, excluding Sunday. To schedule an exam, call 1-800-296-0664.
 
Q: What should I do if I fail the examination?
A: You will need to reapply to sit for the exam by contacting NCBTMB at 1-800-296-0664 for instructions.
 
Q: What should I do if I fail the Colonic examination?
A: You will need to reapply with the Department of Health by submitting a new completed application, with a retake fee of $150 dollars.
 
Q: Can I fax my change of address to you or may I leave my change of address on your voice mail or can you take a change of address over the telephone?
A: You may write a letter requesting the change that includes the type of address to be changed and faxing it to (850) 487-9626. You will need your current license number and the control number from the license for security reasons. Remember a change of location for a massage establishment requires the completion of an application and submission of the appropriate fees.
 
Q: Is a massage establishment license needed for a licensed massage therapist to perform massage therapy in an acupuncturist, chiropractor, dentist, physical therapist or podiatrist's office?
A: YES.
 
Q: Is insurance coverage necessary for a massage establishment?
A: Yes, the applicant must submit proof confirming property damage and bodily injury liability insurance coverage for the proposed establishment. Only the licensed massage therapist who is the owner of the establishment may use insurance from a professional association to satisfy this requirement for massage establishment licensure.
 
Q: When will my massage establishment be inspected? Will the inspector call first?
A: The inspector may visit the facility at anytime to conduct a routine inspection of your licensed establishment.  For new business inspections, the owner of the establishment will be contacted by the inspector to set an appointment to conduct the initial inspection.
 
Q: How can I find a Board approved school to attend?
A: Review a list of Board approved schools (pdf - 168kb).
 
Q: Can massage therapists provide body wrapping services?
A: Yes, a licensee under Chapter 480, F.S., has always been able to provide body wrapping services. A person does not have to be a licensed massage therapist to perform body wraps. However, they are required to take a twelve (12) hour course and then register as a body wrapper under the Board of Cosmetology. A registered body wrapper will only be able to use pre-soaked wrap material and will not be allowed to apply oils or creams directly on the body. Unlike licensed massage therapists who are able to use their bare hands when applying oils and creams on their clients

Continuing Education Questions
 
Q: I have completed more hours for this biennium than was necessary. May I carry the balance over to the next renewal period?
A: No, all hours must be earned within your renewal period and can not be carried over to the next biennium.
 
Q: I have received my renewal notice and have not completed my required continuing education hours. May I mail in my renewal and complete my hours later?
A: No, you must complete all contact hours before you renew your license. You may face disciplinary action for not completing the mandatory continuing education requirement.
 
Q: Will I have to show proof that I have earned all of my contact hours, if I have an active license?
A: All massage therapists licenses are subject to random audit. If audited, you must submit copies of certificates of attendance to the Board as proof of completion of an approved continuing education courses.
 
Q: How many contact hours can I earn through correspondence/home study courses?
A: All continuing education requirements may be met by correspondence/home study courses, but videocassette courses shall not exceed 5 hours per subject and must meet the requirements of rule 64B7-28.010. 12 continuing education hours shall be taken via live classroom instruction which includes hands-on instruction or demonstration, 6 hours of which may be performed as pro bono services pursuant to Rule 64B7-28.0095, F.A.C.

Renewal - Massage Establishments
 
Q: May I indicate a change of business location on my renewal notice?
A: No, you must submit a complete application to the Board in order to change the location of your business. Any address change reflected on your renewal notice will be considered a change in mailing address only.
 
Q: I am ready to renew my license however, the co-owner of this establishment is no longer affiliated with the business, may I reflect this change on my renewal notice?
A: No, any addition to or deletion of owners’ name to or from a massage establishment is considered a change in the ownership of that establishment and you must submit a complete application to the Board for a new license number to be issued.
 
Q: I have received a notice for renewal of my massage establishment license, however I am no longer in business. How do I notify the Board?
A: Write out of business across your license or your renewal notice and mail it to the Board office.
