The purpose of this curricula is to familiarize the Florida public health workforce and their community partners with the concepts of the Core Functions and Ten Essential Services of Public Health through the use of the planning model, Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnership – MAPP. This curricula is also of value to:

1. Public health workforce members who wish to learn about the key public health concepts of the Core Function and Essential Services and the National Public Health Performance Standards Program.

2. Professionals interested in community health improvement and strategic planning skills.

3. Public health workers involved in quality improvement, public health preparedness, chronic disease prevention, oral health coalitions, healthy start coalitions and PACE EH-Planned Approach to Community Environmental Health.

4. Students in Florida Schools of Public Health

The curricula will provide opportunities for participants to learn the Core Functions and Ten Essential Services of public health by applying specific skills found in each of the phases of MAPP.  Participants will practice MAPP skills through a variety of exercises and activities. At the conclusion of the curricula, participants will have completed an abbreviated MAPP process and produce a sample community health improvement action plan.

This curricula was originally developed to be implemented in a group workshop format; however, it can be completed by an individual at their workstation.

The estimated time for an individual to complete the entire curricula is between 4 - 8 hours, depending on their skill  and level of public health practice.

The workshop format of this curricula can be completed in a day and a half. A two day workshop would be most ideal.

The various materials and resources found in this curricula can  be used as tools in the daily practice of community health improvement.
