Florida's State Surgeon General
Harry Frank Farmer, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., FACP is a Florida native, growing up in the New Smyrna Beach area. After graduating high school, Dr. Farmer completed undergraduate and
graduate level coursework in History, obtaining his Ph.D. in 1969.
Shortly after obtaining his Ph.D. in History, Dr. Farmer joined the Army and served during the Vietnam War. He discharged from the Army in 1971 and served in the
Inactive Army Reserve until 1979.
Dr. Farmer attended the Medical College of Georgia from 1972-1976. After earning his medical degree, Dr. Farmer interned at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach and
completed his residency at University Hospital in Jacksonville. Dr. Farmer is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and has worked in a variety of settings including
private practice.
In 1984, Dr. Farmer joined the Florida National Guard where he enhanced his education and training as a battalion surgeon. He later became an Air Force Flight Surgeon
and retired at the rank of Colonel in 2004.
Dr. Farmer has served on the Florida Medical Association (FMA) Board of Governors and Florida Board of Medicine and has also served as FMA President and Chair of the
Board of Medicine.
Dr. Farmer has been married since 1973 and has two grown children.
